Common Trauma Symptoms

Trauma affects everyone differently. Below are examples of symptoms often associated with trauma, based on categories described in the DSM-5.

Avoidance Symptoms

  • Avoiding certain places, people, situations, or reminders of the trauma
  • Emotional numbness, anxiety, depression, or guilt

Re-experiencing Symptoms

  •  Intrusive thoughts or memories
  • Nightmares or flashbacks

Hyperarousal Symptoms

  • Irritability, anger, or hypervigilance
  • Reckless or self-destructive behavior
  • Difficulty sleeping

Negative Mood and Cognition Symptoms

  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Trouble remembering parts of the traumatic event
  • Changes in behaviors, routines, or beliefs
